Moodle mobile app connection error "The site url is no longer supported in this app"

We’ve investigated the error you reported when trying to connect to https://spbd.xxxxxdomain.com using the official Moodle mobile app (“The site … is no longer supported in this app. You can still access it using a web browser.”).

This is not due to a problem with our server or your Moodle configuration. It is caused by a policy change in the official Moodle app itself.

According to Moodle’s documentation:

  1. When you see the message “The site [url] is no longer supported in this app…” it usually means the site is hosted by a non-official Moodle hosting service provider (IndicHosts.net is a non-official Moodle hosting service provider). In this case, Moodle requires a Moodle App Premium subscription for the app to work with the Moodle installation.

    – Official KB article:  Moodle Services knowledge base
       https://support.moodle.com/support/solutions/articles/80000985001

  2. The Free plan of the Moodle app is “compatible with most Moodle sites, except sites hosted by non-official partners or service providers”.

    – Moodle app plans:   https://docs.moodle.org/501/en/Moodle_app_plans Moodle Docs

In other words, Moodle HQ now distinguishes between:

  • Self-hosted / institutional sites, which can generally still use the free app plan; and

  • Sites provided by third-party hosting providers, which require a paid Moodle App plan to be accessible via the official app.

Our server is correctly serving your Moodle versions 4.x.x and 5.x.x site over HTTPS, and mobile web access works normally. The block is occurring on Moodle’s side when the app checks your site URL against their service.

What are the options?

To restore access via the official Moodle app for spbd.xxxxxdomain.com, Moodle’s documentation suggests:

  1. Purchase a Moodle App Premium subscription for this site via the Moodle Apps Portal:
          https://apps.moodle.com Moodle Services knowledge base+1

  2. OR move the site to MoodleCloud or a Moodle Certified Service Provider, where the Premium app plan is included in the hosting:
          https://www.moodlecloud.com
          https://moodle.com/certified-partners/ Moodle Services knowledge base

Without one of these options, users will still be able to access the site perfectly well via any mobile browser (Chrome, Safari, etc.), but the official Moodle app will continue to show the “site not accessible through the app” message for this domain.

If you’d like, we can assist with the technical side once you choose the preferred option (for example, adding the subscription key from the Moodle Apps Portal to your site’s Site administration → Mobile app → Mobile settings page).
