Disabling Secure Password Authentication (SPA)

What is this?

A recent software update pushed out by Microsoft has caused Secure Password Authentication to be enabled on the majority of customer's email clients.

Unfortunately, being a Corporate feature this is causing issues in certain installations of Micorsoft Outlook, where license issues maybe present. As such it will need to be disabled.

Here's a brief guide for turning it off for different mail clients that would have been affected by Microsoft's latest software update,

Outlook Express
  • Select the Tools menu at the top of the screen and hit Accounts
  • In Accounts, go to the Properties and navigate to the Servers tab
  • In the Servers tab, remove the tick from Secure Password Authentication
Outlook 2002
  • Select the Tools menu at the top of the screen and hit Email Accounts
  • In Email Accounts, go to View or change existing e-mail accounts and navigate to your Indichosts.net POP3 email account
  • Remove the tick from Secure Password Authentication
Outlook 2007
  • Select the Tools menu at the top of the screen and hit Account Settings
  • Select Change on your Indichosts.net POP3 email account
  • Remove the tick from Require login using Secure Password Authentication (SPA)
  • Click More Settings and go to the Advanced tab
  • In here you'll need to change your Incoming mail port to 110 and your Outgoing mail port to 25
  • You will also need to ensure SSL and Encryption are turned off
Windows Live Mail
  • Select the Tools menu at the top of the screen and hit Accounts
  • In Accounts, go to the Properties and navigate to the Servers tab
  • In the Servers tab, remove the tick from Secure Password Authentication
