Question: In the 'Activation' email, you stated we could upload files to either www or public_html. Does that mean either folder? Do they then somehow "sync" with each other?
On Linux OS, the actual physical folder to serve data is /public_html/.
/www/ is only a shortcut to the same same folder. Hence, its best to upload to the /public_html/.
On Windows OS please upload the data under /wwwroot/
